SlateScape's matte finish is similar to honed granite and as it wears it develops a patina like worn leather. Its low-luster finish reflects very little light, but the colors are deep and natural. It is cool and solid to the touch and has mass like natural stone.

Material Content: Recycled Paper, Portland Cement, and fly ash (added for strength).

Routine Cleaning and Upkeep:

Wash the surface with soap and water followed by a clean water rinse. Clean up spills quickly with a liquid cleaner followed by a clean water rinse. Limited use of abrasive cleaners is ok, but realize that they will remove the finish and with it the coating applied in fabrication, thereby reducing its effectiveness.

Removing Stains &

Repairing Scratches & Burn Marks:

Rub aggressively with an abrasive cleaner applied to a moist cellulose sponge. If that doesn't take care of it, use a 3M Scotchbrite pad, medium coarse, followed by a fine 400 grit abrasive cloth. ** Always keep the surface damp and use moderate pressure with all procedures. Rub in random patterns.

Re-Sealing Instructions for Slatescape in the following colors:

Pewter, Redwood, and Pistachio

You will now need to re-apply a coat of 100% pure Tung Oil. Do not use Tung Oil that has varnish or shellac additives. Tung oil is used to darken the surfaces, give it a slight luster, and reduce surface absorption. When applying Tung Oil, use a soft cloth and keep coats LIGHT. Buff out excess with a clean cloth. Allowing oil to remain on the countertop will leave you wiht a tacky surface for 1 to 2 weeks.

Re-Sealing Instructions for Slatescape Slate Grey:

You will now need to re-apply a coat of Aqua Mix Enrich n' Seal. The sealer is used to reduce surface absorption. When applying Enrich n' Seal use a soft cloth and keep coats LIGHT. Buff out excess with a clean cloth. Remember to work in small sections so that the sealer does not dry before you are able to wipe off any excess.

General Precautions: Clean up spills promptly, especially acidic liquids like citric acid and vinegar, these will leave stains. Do not use your SlateScape as a cutting board - it will scratch the surface and dull your knives. Reapply Tung Oil one to four times per year whenever your SlateScape appears dry. Your SlateScape may require a different maintenance schedule depending on use.

Why don't we need to have a sub-top under our SlateScape™ countertops?
Because SlateScape is 40% lighter than natural stone, a subtop is not needed unless overhangs exceed 18 inches.

When does the countertop need to be re-oiled?
Surfaces should be re-oiled when they appear dull and are showing signs of use. It is typical to oil the countertops twice per year. If use is heavier, oiling more often would be recommended. Always keep oilings light and wipe off excess with a dry soft cloth after initial application. After a few hours beads of oil may appear – be sure to wipe them away too. Oiling too frequently and/or not wiping oil off thoroughly may result in a tacky build-up and this in turn will lead to needing your countertops refinished.

Why are there white circles on my counter?
Acidic liquids like vinegar, red wine, and citrus will leave "etchings" on SlateScape material if spills are not cleaned up promptly. These etchings may be taken care of with minimal effort (see C&M). However, over time as the etchings and patterns of wear accumulate, homeowners may choose to have their tops refinished. Some of our customers prefer the patina that is achieved with time and use on our SlateScape tops. Normal use will necessitate refinishing every two to five years.

What's the primer made of?
Aglia Penetrating Primer is made entirely from natural raw materials. (Refined Linseed Oil, Citrus Peel Oil >10%, Wood (stand) Oil 1-10%, Colophonium glycerol ester, < 1% Dammar Resin, Lecithin, Co/Zr/Ca drying agents.) This primer dries tack free and does not swell when in contact with water.

What's the oil made of?
Drupaceous seeds of the tung oil tree (Aleurites fordii) are the source
of tung oil. These oil-rich seeds are pressed to extract the oil.Tung oil is composed primarily of eleostearic (elaeostearic) acid, with smaller amounts of oleic, linoleic and palmitic glycerides.

Do I need to wait to use my countertop after it is installed?
After the finishing layer of 100% pure Tung oil is applied, we recommend letting it air dry overnight before use.

How do I take care of my countertop?
Good housekeeping is the best way to take care of your countertop. Wiping up spills immediately will prevent etching and staining. Acidic liquids are known to leave white marks on SlateScape countertops. Red wine, citrus, and vinegar for example must be cleaned up immediately if spilled on the top. These liquids will not exactly stain the top; red wine will not leave a red stain, but will leave a white etching mark.
