Eco-Cem FAQ

Question: What Is Eco-Cem Made of?

Eco-Cem is made from recycled paper and reclaimed fly ash (for added strength), embedded in a cement matrix. The material is pressed into sheets, and then fabricated by experts at Nu-Art.

Question: What is the surface of Eco-Cem treated with?

After fabrication at Nu-Art, the Eco-Cem surface is treated with Aglaia penetrating primer followed by several coats of 100% pure Tung Oil. This treatment creates a protective barrier from minor stains and scratches. Depending on use, 100% pure Tung Oil will need to be reapplied to the surface one to four times per year to maintain its appearance.

Question: How Heat Resistant is Eco-Cem?

Eco-Cem can resist very high temperatures up to 500 degrees and above. It will not be damaged or scortched if a pan taken out of the oven is placed directly on it.

Question: How Stain Resistant is Eco-Cem?

Eco-Cem's ability to resist staining is comparable to other cement countertops. The best way to aviod stains on the Eco-Cem surface is to clean up stains promptly, especially acidic liquids. While "etching" may occur over time (that is, a red wine spill will not leave a red stain, but a white etching mark), Eco-Cem can be resurfaced as needed. Eco-Cem material's colorant permeates the material, and thus it can be sanded and restored as often as needed. Renewability and sustainability make Eco-Cem surfaces a better choice than traditional concrete. In other applications, exterior cladding for example, Eco-Cem will not be affected by UV rays.
